Singer-guitarist uses her business and planning skills to promote herself and other local musicians. By Darnell Morris-Compton darnell.morris-compton@intakeweekly.com
All about Ann Here's the skinny on Indy's one-woman independent music champion. Ann McWilliams became the tireless advocate -- almost like a superhero -- for local musicians.
She's a music promoter, advocate, organizer, radio show host and a lead singer in a band. "It's a labor of love and a creative expression," said 33-year-old McWilliams. But McWilliams stumbled upon this role by accident. She developed her event-planning skills for good causes in college, honed her business sense after working in various positions in the music business, and understands the struggles of an independent musician from being one herself.
Fortunately, her talents and work revolve around her passion: independent music.
And, for the summer alone, McWilliams will be surrounded by music as she helps promote nearly 100 live events. How does she do it all? "I concentrate on what's right in front of me," McWilliams said. "The first thing that comes to mind, that's what I do." And, with all these concerts to help promote, it might seem laughable to think she has free time. But she swears she does. At least a bit. "I was a big fan of 'The Apprentice,' so I had to take time out for that," she said. "I was rooting for Troy. I think Bill was great. He's all about business." In addition to "The Apprentice," she hangs out with her husband and her cats, Marble and Kitty.
"(Kitty's) real name is Kats Domino. They're both great cats. They are my office assistants as they help me out all the time, filing, answering phones," she said. "They sort of own me. They take a lot of my attention, too."
