At the Richmonds’ concert season draw to close By JOHN WALKER When not performing, singer/songwriter Ann McWilliams teaches guitar and voice. But not in the usual way.
Instead of focusing on skills, she concentrates on finding her students’ fears, such as getting up in front of a crowd, figuring, if a student wants to learn to perform music despite such fears, it’s because there is latent talent waiting to come out.
“When you feel like you want to do something, there’s usually a reason for it,” McWilliams said.
The 33-year-old Indianapolis native will bring her own talents to the local stage on Saturday when she and her band appear At The Richmond’s along with The Spud Puppies, a progressive bluegrass band that appeared at the local concert venue in a terrific outdoor show last summer.
McWilliams has received critical acclaim for her progressive pop musical style and songwriting talents, which can be heard on her latest CD, “Wrapped Around It,” the third she has released with her current band.
Samples from the CD, which contains everything from love songs to a song about the 19th Century philosopher Henry David Thoreau, can be heard at her Web site, www.amcwilliams.com.
“Something that touches me emotionally is something I feel I can write about,” she said.
